Ready or not, 2024 is fast approaching, and with it new flooring trends. Here are some of the biggest trends you can expect when it comes to flooring design this coming year.
Hardwood and Carpeting Trends in 2024
Hardwood Trends
Hardwood floors are not going anywhere, and there are so many reasons beyond convenience that these floors have remained relevant. 2024 flooring trends suggest that a few hardwood styles will be coming back in style, with the first being the herringbone pattern. Herringbone is an arrow-like pattern that wooden planks are installed in. Similar in style to chevron, which is also arrow-like, herringbone floors have a more rustic feel than chevron. This is the result of how the boards meet in an angled pattern, with chevron looking much smoother and more arrow-like. Herringbone wood floors are stylish and eye-catching, so it’s really no wonder style analysts have them as one of the biggest trends in flooring for the new year.
Another hardwood floor trend for 2024 is smoked or plumed wood. This is a style of wood notable for its dark, distressed tones. The smoked or plumed style is not new, in fact it’s been around for centuries. Its origins are somewhat strange, too. Horse owners noticed that the wood in their barns and stables that was exposed to horse urine was darker in color, and the aesthetic caught on. Of course the effect is not produced like this anymore, instead using sterile ammonia fumes to achieve the result. This gives the wood a burnt, or smoked appearance, thus giving it its name. These moody floors really highlight the wood grain, and much like herringbone, create a rustic and earthy vibe.
Carpeting Trends
Carpeting has experienced a comeback in popularity in the last few years, and what flooring is on trend for 2024 suggests that carpet’s star continues to rise. There are a few trends concerning carpet you should expect to see more of this new year, including textured carpeting. Textured carpets are again aiming for a rustic, traditional feeling. Interior design seems to be moving in the rustic direction quickly, as evidenced by the hardwood trends we’ve already explored.
Using natural carpet fibers to create uniquely textured carpets seems to be a popular style these days, and the craftsmanship of these carpets makes it clear why. Rather than mass-produced uniformity, consumers are looking for carpeting that has character and texture. However, don’t expect everyone to be a fan of these carpets and rugs, as their textures can be off-putting to some in search of more traditional comfort. Plush and thick carpeting is also a popular choice lately, as people are really embracing the warm and cozy aspects of this retro style.
There are also some new, out-there floor color trends in 2024 when it comes to carpeting. Mossy, earthy green colors are really in style right now, and that is somewhat surprising for aesthetic reasons. Green carpets have not always been a popular option, but their warm aesthetic qualities are easy to see. Other earthy tones like warm sienna, terracotta, and umber are also catching on with interior designers. Carpeting design seems to be focused heavily on warmth and comfort, which makes sense given its soft physical characteristics.
